Artist Biography – Sharon Helmes

Canadian born, Sharon Helmes grew up in Montreal, Quebec where she realized at a very young age that she had a gift for art.  Sharon met her husband in Canada, they moved to the US in 1998 and raised two daughters in Northern California. They are now retired and have been living in Henderson, Nevada for the past 6 years.

Sharon became a watercolorist over 25 years ago, gifting her paintings to friends and family who strongly encouraged her to start selling her work.  She has found her venue for showing & selling her art at the Boulder City Art Gallery, and has been a member of the Boulder City Art Guild since 2022.

When her children were young, Sharon was an active parent who initiated a Watercolor program at their primary school, teaching watercolor to kids from Kindergarten to 6th grade.

During Covid, Sharon was approached by a dear friend to illustrate a children’s book in watercolor – a new and rewarding adventure.  She also started working in acrylic medium, painting pet portraits on a commission basis. You can follow her on Instagram @CanvasCreationsBySharon.   

Sharon is a mixed media artist who constantly pushes herself to evolve and grow as an artist, exploring new techniques and styles to keep her work contemporary and exciting.  She recently added silk painting, quilting and mono printing using a gelli plate, to her array of artistry.

Sharon will be holding workshops on Gelli Plate printing as well as Introduction to Watercolor at the Boulder City Art Center in 2024.
