Ernie J. Valdovinos
Biography
My name is Ernie Valdovinos, a ceramic artist. Originally, from So. California but moved to Henderson 8+/- years ago when I retired from architecture. I have been working with clay for approximately 8 years. I am self-taught in ceramics but also have taken a few key classes, and workshops to help aid in advancing the outcome of my craft.
I work in mid and high fire ceramics with varying firings and techniques -electric, gas & wood firings. My favorite is Raku, a unique Japanese and western ceramic technique where pottery is taken out of the hot kiln while still red hot and placed in combustible materials like sawdust or paper to rapidly cool and create unique effects on the glaze and clay.
I rarely make duplicates of any of my pieces that are free flowing, dynamic, textural and unusual with an oriental and well-traveled influence.
In 2024 and 2025, I submitted work to the City of Las Vegas "Celebrating Life" fine art competition. In both years I won first place in the ceramics division, and my work is displayed at the Las Vegas City Hall Gallery.
I have displayed and sold work at various festivals including, Summerlin Festival of Fine Art, Boulder City Spring Jamboree, Henderson Fine Art Festival on Water Street and private venues as well.
I am a member of the Boulder City Art Guild, City Lights Art Guild and the Nevada Clay Guild. I was the Activities Director for 4 years and the President of the Nevada Clay guild for 3 +/- years. I am an advocate for the advancement of the arts for young artists by promoting & personally funding scholarships for high school students continuing in the arts.
