History of the Boulder City Art Guild

More than 40 years ago, a group of Boulder City artists gathered together to paint, draw and create art.  The group called themselves “The Senior Art Guild.”

Growing as an art group, they wanted to be more involved with the community,  so in 1976 these artists formally re-organized, obtained a tax identification number and a business license.  The artists were now known as the Boulder City Art Guild, Inc.

In June of 1977, the guild held their first show at Grace Community Church in Boulder City.  They went on to display their art at the Boulder City Credit Union, the Boulder City Library, Lake Mead Marina, the annual Chamber of Commerce Spring Jamboree, the Doodlebug Bazaar in the Boulder City Parks & Recreation Center and at various businesses around town.

Having grown to more than 50 members and having exhibits in so many places, the time had come for the guild to establish a gallery of their own so in the late 1970’s, local realtor Dick Blair donated his office to the guild for that purpose.  In 1979, the gallery was moved to 1495 Nevada Highway, where the building was remodeled and transformed into an art gallery and cultural center.  The official gallery opening reception took place on December 14, 1980.  The gallery and the guild thrived in this location for many years.  There were receptions, art shows, art classes and the awarding of scholarships to talented, deserving students majoring in art.

The Boulder City Art Guild Gallery remained at the Nevada Highway location until 1995 when it outgrew the space.  At that time, an opportunity to have a larger space in the center of town materialized.  Grant money was awarded to revitalize the historic Boulder Dam Hotel and included a spot to house an art gallery.  A portion of the hotel’s second floor was remodeled for just that purpose.  On July 4, 1995, the guild hosted a reception for their new home where it remains to this day.

Since 1995, the guild continues to grow and prosper with over 100 members.  The Boulder City Art Guild sponsors two annual outside art shows and monthly receptions for a featured artist.  The gallery is a stop on the Chamber of Commerce Wine Walks, with exhibits at the Boulder City Hospital, Hoover Dam Lodge and Boulder City Hall.

The guild awards scholarships to talented high school seniors and mini-scholarships to youngsters taking classes at the Boulder City Art Center in ABC Park.

Guild members conduct a variety of classes and workshops that are offered to artists of all talent levels.  These educational opportunities are generally either free or at a minimal cost.
